Assignment #1:

Tilt-Shift Photography:

Tilt Shift Lens:                                             Tilt Shift Before & After:

Tilt Shift Example.jpeg

History:

Tilt shift photography has been used since the 1960s. Nikon made a lens with shift movements in 1962 and Canon made a lens with tilt and shift movements in 1973. Tilt shift photography is used to make normal items or places look like a miniature scene. Tilt shift photography is done mostly in birds eye view. To take a tilt shift photo you first have to make sure there is no obstructions in the frame, then you tilt the camera down and the lens up. this will alter the focus on the lens so focus on the main area of the photo. This will cause the other areas to become out of focus or blurry. This along with the shifting of the lens creates a photo with a miniature looking scene.

My Tilt Shift Photos:

I made these tilt shift photo's by taking pictures in birds eye view. I did this by going up stairs or aiming the camera above the items/places. Then i edited the images in photoshop.

I picked the first image because I like how the pathway looks and that there is a person in it because it makes it look more model like. I picked the second  picture because I like how the cars look with the tilt shift affect. I chose the third photo because I like how the fire hydrant looks and that I could get a picture right above it. I decided to add the forth picture because I like how the person and cars look. I chose the fifth image because I think it's creative and different ideaFinally I picked the last photo because I like how the stairs are in the picture and Ilike the television as well.

UPDATE:
New tilt shift photo that I edited. I really liked how this one turned out so I'm adding it to my blog. :)

Assignment #2:

Eric Johansson:

The Artist himself.

Eric Johansson is an amazing photographer who takes images and manipulates them to make them  look like impossible to take images. He is from Sweden and he is a photographer and retoucher. His goal with his projects is to make them look real even though they are edited in photoshop. All of his pictures look like impossible to create scenes that are taken from a single shot from a camera. It is very creative and challenging so I can not wait to do this assignment and learn more about him.
Erik Johanssons Photography:

Cut & Fold Cut & Fold
I picked this photo because I like how pretty much everyone can relate to it and know right away        what he did with the image. Almost everyone has had to cut a dotted line on a paper for some reason,    maybe to get a coupon from a magazine or cut from a school permission slip, many people will be able   to relate to this image and understand why he decided to make it this way. I also think the editing is  amazing and makes the picture look really cool and unique.
Downside of the Upside
       Downside of the Upside
I choose this image because I love the different perspectives that make it look like an optical illusion. I also like that it's black and white because it adds a nice touch to it and and makes the scene look more dark and rainy. The people in the picture also adds to the image because you can figure out more about the photo because of them. For example you can tell it was a cold day because of there jackets.
Self-actualization
                                                        Workflow
I choose this last photo because I really like the creativity of it. I like the background behind the painter because it adds a setting to the image. I love how the person transitions so smoothly from real to painting. I also like how he seems to be unfinished because the painting he is working on is unfinished as well. This is probably my favourite picture of his.

My Photoshoped Room:
I think i could have done a little better with the background colours and the shading on the person but for this project being only my second time using photoshop I think I did pretty good. It took a long time to make this picture and it was quite difficult but I like how the end photo turned out.

Assignment #3

The Exposure Triangle:

My Photo's:
f/4
f/5.6
f/8
f/11
f/16
f/22
f/32
f/36

F/4 - The photo is very dark and the background is blurry
F/5.6 - The photo is a bit lighter and the background is a little bit less blurry then the first picture.
F/8 - The photo is lighter but the background is still blurry.
F/11 - The photo is lighter and the background is much less blurry.
F/16 - The photo is a lot brighter and the background is much more focused.
F/22 - The picture is dark again but the background is more focused.
F/32 - The picture is still dark but the background is focused more.
F/36 - The picture is dark but the background is focused.

The photo's get brighter in the middle and is darker towards the beginning and end. the background starts of blurry and gets more focused the higher number.

Assignment #4

Shutter Speed:

My Photo's:

I took these photo's using shutter speed 1/60. I took the photo's of the flags but I didn't want the building to be in the background so the flags are in the corner of the picture.  I really like using shutter speed because it captures every movement but keeps it focused. I also like that you can make thing's focused and blurred when taking a photo to add more affect to it. I love that when you scroll through the photo's that you can see the movement so clearly. It is a awesome feature and I am definitely going to use it more in the future.

Assignment #5

Infrared Photography:

History:

Infrared photography became possible around the early 20th century. The first published infrared photography came around in February 1910 and October 1910. Infrared photography became more available in the 1930s when suitable film was introduced commercially. 33 different kinds of film was created by 1937 and infrared film was also available. False colour infrared became popular in the 1940s. The film became more available in the 1960s and it became popular when a number of 1960 recording artists issued albums with infrared cover photo's.

Current uses for Infrared Photography:

Infrared photography can be used for many different things. Here is a list of some of the things infrared can do.

Medicine - Infrared photography can penetrate the skin so it can easily see veins and venous blood. Infrared is also used to see enamel in dental photography and many other areas of medicine.

Military - The military use infrared to see people (or buildings.) that is camouflaged with dead foliage. The person would look black with the infrared and the foliage would be white. It is also used to find illegal drugs.

Forensics - Infrared photography can be used to see things in crime scenes that people can not see. A doctor named Miranda Van Lersel found that if you use infrared photography you can see traces of soil after it has been removed for up to 4 hours and drops of water for up to 22 hours.

How Infrared Photography is Achieved:

There are different ways that you can take, or make, infrared photo's you can take them with a D-SLR camera, make it infrared in photoshop or a digital camera.

With a Camera - To take infrared photography with a camera you will need a D-SLR camera and a lens that can use filters and you will need to buy a IR-filter. It is also very important that you use a tripod as it is impossible to take IR photographs without a proper stabilizer. IR photography is different with ever lens you use so some lenses will not work well when taking infrared photo's.

When taking a infrared photo a blue sky will appear very dark or black while plants will appear white. When taking a infrared photo it will have a lot of exposure time so if you move while taking the
photo it will become blurry. This is why mot people take landscape shots and why you should use a tripod.

The best way to take a infrared photo is to set up the camera first because when you apply the filter you will most likely not be able to see anything in the viewfinder because it is designed to block
visible light. After you apply the filter you will have to re-focus the camera. Because you can not see anything through the viewfinder it can be very difficult to re-focus it. The best way to re-focus the camera is to have it auto focus with the infrared filter on. You can choose different types of filters to change the outcome of the photo.

After you have done all the steps you will be almost ready to take the photo. First put your camera on manual exposure, after that make sure you are on the lowest IOS setting to keep the noise level as low as possible. When you take he picture make sure not to move the camera. This is very important because if you move the camera while it is taking the photo it will be blurry. The exposure time can be 10-30 seconds long or more. Wait until you hear the camera take the photo before you move the camera.

With Photoshop - To make a infrared photo with photoshop you will first have to choose or take a photo and open it up with any version of photoshop you may have. This will be just a short summary of how to edit the photo. First create a new layer. After you have done that go to channels palette and selected green. Next apply the gaussian blur affect to it by going to filter - blur - gaussian blur.
Use the bar at the bottom to change how much blur affect there is make sure it is blurry but you can still make out the image. Change the blend mode from normal to screen. Change the adjustment layer to channel mixer. In the "Source Channels" section, set red to 50%, green to 200%, and blue to 50% then click the Monochrome checkbox and press ok.

After this your photo should still be black and white but it will be very bright.  The infrared affect is too intense so lower the opacity by clicking on the layer and changing the opacity to a lower precent. After this add some grain to the image. Create a new layer and make the background white by pressing ctr + backspace / command + delete. After this go up to filter menu select noise then add noise. Set the amount to 20% set distribution to uniform and check the box next to Monochromatic. After this go to blend mode options and select multiply. If there is too much grain lower the opacity.

After you have done all the steps you are almost done. Duplicate the layer that you edited and drag it between the channel mixer adjustments layer and the grain layer. change the blend mode to overlay and change the opacity to 50%. After this you are done!

With A Digital Camera - To take a picture with a digital camera set up the camera like you usually would for a normal picture. You do not need a filter with a digital camera. Use a custom white balance on vegetation. Make sure the camera is focused. If you have a good camera you can trust it to auto focus, if not focus in live view. After you have set it u take the picture and you're done.

Personal / Artist Statement / The Photography:
Personal Image:

Unified Series images:

I used photoshop to achieve the infrared look on these images. I used the photoshop essentials tutorial to help me make the images. I made the images my own by changing some of the steps while making them to better fit my images. First off I changed the amount of blur in the images to make it fit better.
I also changed the channel mixer colour percentages. I did this to make the black and white a
bit brighter. I changed the amount of grain as well. During the final step when you add a bit of colour I changed the percentages of opacity to what I wanted for the pictures.

The unified series images theme is nature. I chose this theme because I really like taking pictures of nature and because each image has nature in it. (i.e. plants in first image, leaves in second image, pumpkin in last image.)Than I took these pictures and edited them in photoshop.
